In a wilderness area in the south-east of a newfound Australian colony, a lone figure, followed by his faithful dog, had his eyes intently focused on the bed of the gully he was following.
The gully formed part of hilly, unnamed terrain draining to a river that the Aborigines had, for thousands of years, called Numabulla and which Europeans, some seventeen years prior, had named Mary.
James Nash’s discovery of Gympie gold not only saved the Colony of Queensland from bankruptcy, but created what some described as “the wildest rush in Queensland history.”
